2008. After an abbreviated

business meeting we will open a

First Degree Exemplification for 11

Brothers, come and observe this

Degree. If it has been a while

since you made your own First

Degree, you will be reminded of

the beauty and dignity of this

ceremony. Join in and warmly

welcome our new Brother Knights.

A reception will follow the degree.

Vocations

On March 30, 6PM, our Council is

sponsoring a pizza dinner for Vita

Nova youth, followed by showings

of Supreme’s Vocation DVDs -- the

Priesthood and Religious Life for

Women. These were well received

by our youth a year ago.

Father Joe designated Eucharistic

Adoration on Friday, April 11 for

the intention of increasing

vocations. Brother Mike Fober,

Council Vocations Director, will

coordinate the Knights’ prayer vigil

during adoration. Sunday April 13

is the World Day of Prayer for

Vocations. Knights should pray for

vocations throughout the weekend.

Sacred Vessels

At the March meeting, Council

appropriated $614 for the

purchase of a Side Chalice, a

Ciborium, and a Wine Decanter

made of precious metals for Our

Lord’s Body and Blood. Included

in this amount is $137 donated by

Carpe Deum to the Knights

Unborn Victims of

Violence

In March, the Council adopted a

resolution urging the NC General

Assembly to pass the proposed

Unborn Victims of Violence Bill

(HB 263, SB 295). This proposed

legislation recognizes the rights of

the unborn child as a separate and

distinct victim, when a crime is

committed against a mother and

her unborn child. Thirty-five other

states have passed similar

legislation. The resolution

encourages individual efforts to

inform, educate and motivate, in a

charitable manner, elected

representatives and the public

about the merits of this proposed

legislation.

The Council’s Public Policy Issues

and Initiatives Committee is

2

developing resource materials

(draft letters, talking points, etc.) to

facilitate such contacts and

educational efforts.

March 31 is the Feast of the

Assumption and also K of C’s “Day

of the Unborn Child.”

State Convention

Jim Haag and Gary Corsmeier are

the Council’s delegates to the

State Convention, in Asheville,

May 2-5. To be deliberated at that

meeting is a State version of our

Council’s proposed resolution

(see above) urging the NC

General Assembly to pass the

proposed Unborn Victims of

Violence Bill. If the State

Convention adopts this proposal,

NC’s 11,000 Knights will mobilize

to encourage adoption of this prolife

legislation to protect the lives of

NC’s unborn children.

Peter’s Status

Peter is continuing to progress

physically, and it is great see him

at mass when he can get there.

He is exercising to build leg and

upper body strength.

Peter’s brother and wife will be

going away April 19-28 and Peter

can use some assistance during

that time. Call or e-mail Jim Haag

for specifics.

Carl and Carla will be moving to

North Dakota in July; hence, Peter

is looking for either (1) a roommate

at Camden Manor Park or

elsewhere or (2) an alternative

handicapped friendly living option.

If you know of a person to share

the apartment or other housing

possibilities, please let Peter know

via e-mail (peterbk@nc.rr.com) or

give him a call at 368-7145.

Venerable Servant

Pope Benedict XVI Saturday (3/15)

approved a decree recognizing the

heroic virtue of Father Michael J.

McGivney, founder of the Knights

of Columbus. The pope's

declaration significantly advances

the priest's process toward

sainthood and gives the parish

priest the distinction of "Venerable

Servant of God." If canonized,

Father would be the first American

born priest to be so honored.

"All of us who are members of the

Knights of Columbus are

profoundly grateful for this

recognition of the holiness of our

founder," said Supreme Knight

Carl Anderson. "The strength of

the Knights of Columbus today is a

testament to his timeless vision,

his holiness and his ideals."

Men’s Retreat

What is God saying to me at this

moment of my life? There seems

to be so much going on, so many

important” tasks, needs. When do

I have time to even think about

this? My life is getting more

stressful and just getting through

the day is a blessing in itself!

Yes, I do need a time of quiet and

reflection, a time to get a better

perspective on the deeper

meaning of my life. I need to get

into closer contact with God. I want

to improve my relationship with His

Son.

Come to Avila for our K of

C/Journeymen retreat. It starts

Friday June 20 at 6 PM and closes

Saturday June 21 around 8 PM.

Avila Center is a unique retreat

environment -- a peaceful and

reflective setting for meditation and

prayerful walks around the wooded

landscape.

Fr. Michael Proterra, S.J. will direct

the retreat, drawing on the Spiritual

Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

The men are asked to keep

prayerful silence after conferences

and to ponder the ideas, principles

and approaches discussed.

Father is available to meet with

participants individually and

Eucharist will be celebrated daily.

The $95 cost for the two-day

retreat includes overnight room,

two dinners, breakfast and lunch.

For further information, call Jim

Haag at 841-5817 or Chris

Taurence at 866-0886. This

retreat is now open to other area

parishes.

Issues and Action

Brother Bill Dougherty has called a

meeting of the Public Policy Issues

and Action Committee for April 9

from 7 PM to 8:30 PM. The

Committee’s purpose is to identify,

understand and communicate

Catholic positions in response to

public policies and to encourage

Knights to individually take action

as they are moved to do so. This

might involve contacting public

officials and legislators to explain

the Catholic teachings on moral

issues, e.g., embryonic stem cell

research, end of life decisions,

euthanasia, and abortion. The

Committee is researching and

developing responses and

materials to help Brothers

effectively convey Catholic

positions to legislators, public

officials and other citizens.

Softball Anyone?

Price Council #2546 is holding a

Knights of Columbus Softball

Tournament on Saturday, April

26th, starting at 12 noon. We are

invited to compete against other K

of C Councils. There is a fee of

$15 per player. Why don’t we field

a St. Luke’s Knights softball team?
