Participation

We need your involvement in a Council Program of your choice. Perhaps you are already participating on a team but have not yet signed up.  Attached is the latest Council team volunteer listing. Please call or e-mail Terry Whalen or Jim Haag to add your name.  Become more involved in your Council and get to know your Brother Knights.

Job Network

Council’s Jobs and Skills Networking Group has these goals:

·          Creating an online database of member professions, skills, and hobbies

·          Job networking to learn about open positions.

·          Seminars to learn about growing professions and required training.

·         Ability to identify members that have unique or specialized tools and equipment.

Brother Larry Opanasenko has created an online database that allows users to share information about their profession, future goals, skills, hobbies, tools, and information on job openings and opportunities. The system is open to all and is currently being tested.  Go to www.JSNG4U.org and sign up and try the system out. We are also considering sponsoring short seminars and self help resources. What better time to register than now, given our economic situation!

Marriage Amendment

At our February 4 business meeting, Council adopted a proposal to join the NC4 Marriage Coalition as part of our on-going public policy initiative to support “traditional” marriage in our State.  By doing so, we lend our voice to the many other religious and secular organizations and groups across our State, including our Catholic Bishops, that are seeking to amend our State Constitution to define marriage as the “union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others”.

Mark these very important dates on your calendar and participate, if possible, to protect, defend, and promote traditional marriage.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009:  NC4 Marriage will have a Press Conference in the State Legislative Building Press Room (116 W. Jones St.) starting at 12:30 p.m.  Though this is a workday for many, please consider giving up your lunch hour to stand with our bishops in support of this initiative.

At 3:30 p.m., there will be a “Legislative Conference” in the 2nd floor auditorium of the building.  Jordan Lorence, a nationally known speaker for the Alliance Defense Fund will be talking to our State legislators.  This is open to the public.

Tuesday, March 3, 2009: A Marriage Rally, sponsored by Return America, starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Halifax Mall (between the Legislative and Archdale Buildings.   Your presence at this “Rally” will be an important testimony to our elected representatives that the people of North Carolina want a Marriage Amendment to our State Constitution.  People from all over our State will be there, so bring your spouse and children.  Get there early for easier parking.

Our K of C Council will present our signed petitions to our respective State Representatives and Senators at this rally.

If you can only attend one of Tuesday’s programs, choose the Marriage Rally.

Council Meeting

Council meets 7:30 PM, Wednesday, January 7. A pre-meeting reception will start at 6:30 PM with food and refreshments. We have a special guest who you will not want miss at the pre meeting social. Meeting agenda include: Knight and Family of the Month, Networking Project, State Raffle Ticket Sales, Catholic Parish Outreach, Barbeque Team, and other Council business. Bring your card and rosary.

Please consider offering to bring food and refreshments for pre-meeting socials -- reimbursements made!  Let Terry Whalen, GK know if you can volunteer for this.

Ignatian Retreat

“Stewards of What Has Been Entrusted to Us”

The theme of the 2009 Men’s Ignatian Retreat is:  How we use and share the many gifts and blessings God gives us.  Through mass and familiar devotions, through brief talks and personal prayer – and general retreat silence – Fr. Proterra, S.J. will lead us through an understanding and appreciation of STEWARDSHIP.

Stewardship is the process by which we, individually and together, return to God his gifts to us through generous service of our neighbors. St. Luke’s Knights of Columbus and the Journeymen are jointly sponsoring this retreat for men at Avila Retreat Center, Durham. It starts Friday (6/12) at 6 PM and closes Sunday (6/14) around noon.

Fr. Michael Proterra, S.J., stationed at St. Raphael’s, will direct the retreat, using the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Avila Center is a unique retreat environment -- a peaceful and reflective setting for meditation and prayerful walks around the wooded landscape. The $145 cost for the three-day retreat includes overnight room for two nights, two dinners, two breakfasts and lunch.

For information contact Jim Haag at 841-5817.  Or, reserve your slot today by completing the form below and remitting it with a $50 check to K of C Council #12455.
