Meeting Highlights
The following are highlights from our
last business meeting. This is not meant to replace the official meeting
minutes. The intent is to inform all of our members on our activities. Please
send any corrections or omissions to dsofra@bellsouth.net.

Meeting Date: Wednesday, July 2, 2008 @ 7:30 p.m.
Applications for new membership: None, but interest shown by Bill Donnelly and Joe Smultzski. (Three Knights made their Third Degree on
June 7. A Second Degree is scheduled on July 11 at the State Council's
Organizational Meeting at the N. Raleigh Hilton and three Knights plan to
attend.)
Treasurer's Report: Treasurer not present.
Reports and Actions:
- GK
Terry Whalen asked members to acknowledge Past Grand Knight Jim Haag for
his service to the Council.
- Terry
Whalen thanked the Knights who helped with the BBQ/Party for Fr. Mike
Spurr on 6/8/08.
Terry also thanked all Knights who helped at the Adopt-a-Highway on June
14.
- Our
Council has been recognized as a "Double Star" Council
based on our membership and insurance achievements for the past year.
- Jim
Haag has been appointed the new Program Director for the Council.
Terry Whalen asked all members to join at least one Council program team.
- "Clean
Church Kitchen Team": Terry W. has contacted John DuBiel regarding cleaning required in the Parish kitchen.
Frank Sancineto suggested opening the cleaning duties up to other groups
in the Parish that use the kitchen. Jim Kuszaj mentioned that those
groups would just need some education/direction in how to clean the
kitchen after use. Jim will work on this item in July.
Old
Business:
- Public
Policy Committee: Bill Dougherty updated the members on the activity
that has taken place for the support of "unborn victims of
violence". North
Carolina HB263/SB295 will not get out of committee this
Session so it will have to be reintroduced in the next General
Assembly. The Public Policy Committee will be starting an initiative
on the "Defense of Marriage". Joe Rothengast read the
Raleigh & Charlottte bishops' July 2
statement of support for the proposed NC bill supporting and
defending traditional marriage between a man and a woman.
- Peter
Kraehenbuehl Assistance Team: Peter is now living alone in his
new apartment. Jim Haag described the establishment of a team of
members to schedule a few days every 2 or 3 weeks to visit and/or assist
Peter including driving him to mass on the weekend. A sign-up sheet
was passed around and Terry Whalen agreed that the
Council should support Peter as much as possible.
- BBQ
Pit: Joe Cox stated that work is continuing on the "small"
pit. Joe is shooting for a completion date of the start of
school in August. Joe wiill be
working on the pit on Saturdays and invited all members to
assist, if available.
- The Ignatian Retreat at Avila
Retreat Center
in June went well and was requested to he held
again next year as a full weekend retreat. A $300 contribution is
being given to the Jesuit community and $100 to the Avila
Retreat Center
in thanks for their efforts on the retreat.
- Bill
Dougherty presented a "Knight of the Month" plaque (for 5 years)
as a gift to the Council. The Council is
funding a similar plaque for the "Family of the Month".
New
Business:
- Financial
Secretary's Report: The Council has 115 members to date.
A "Knight Alert" is beng sent to 30
members who have not yet paid their dues for 2008.
- The
State Coucil Organizational Meeting is scheduled
for July 11-13 at the N. Raleigh Hilton.
- Induction
of new Council officers
will be held in August, tentatively.
- Work
will be done on the new
Council Budget within the next month.
- Joe
Rothengast will contact the group that does the parish blood drives to
schedule a blood drive sponsored by the Council.
- Special Olympics:
The 2008 event is over and we will start to plan for our Council's participation
in the 2009 event.
- K of C
Family Week: Joe Rothengast will plan a miniature golf tournament
again this year during Family Week (8/9-8/17)
at the course on Falls of the Neuse.
- July
14 is the "Prayer for a Priest" day for Father Joe M.
- Member
Service survey: Jim Haag described the survey being sent to all
Council members to tabulate their hours of service for the past
year. "Survey Monkey" will be used again this year to
facilitate the survey.
- Veterans Day (Nov. 11):
Dan Tomczak will be working on magnetic ribbons
to be handed out to all veterans of the Armed Services after all masses
the weekend prior to Veterans Day.
- Alll Saints Academy Request for Assistance: The
ASA is moving to the old St. Thomas
More High School
location and have asked the Council to hold a fundraiser to help
this cause. Terry Walen will contact Mary Eshelman for more information.
- The
St. Luke youth groups
have asked to use the BBQ Pit for their first meeting this Fall on September 7. Jim Haag
recommended that the Council provide them training on use of the pit
prior to 9/7.
- CatholicVoiceNC: Bill Dougherty described the
purpose of this effort by the Catholic bishops of NC and urged all
Council members to register at the website, www.CatholicVoiceNC.org.
